Session # 14
THE FINISHING SACRIFICE
The finishing sacrifice is done in a position where there would be
a great move (usually a checkmate) possible, if only one of our piece
wasn't in the way . If we simply try and move our piece in a safe place,
usually the enemy has time to protect himself. Hmmm, What to do? Well,
if a FINISHING movement is possible without you piece in the way, you
must give that piece away, in such a way that the enemy has no choice
to take the piece OR that if he doesn't take the piece, he is left with
a material disadvantage, which, as we already know, should ensure you
an easier win J. I know you're probably saying to yourself
Well
that's fine and dandy but how do I DO IT? You do it by checking the
enemy king (in way where he doesn't have a choice to capture it) with
the piece that is in the way, and if he takes it, you can do your finishing
movement OR capture an enemy piece of the greatest value possible with
the piece that is in the way and if you he doesn't capture you back,
you have your winning material advantage.
Here, white would like to bring their queen
to g7 to check mate the black king, but the rook is in the way. White
sacrifices the rook by going to h7 check, and mate is next by white
on g7!
