Session # 6
THE FORK AND THE SKEWER

Now comes the fun, we will start filling your tool box with different tools or tactics necessary to build up your game. We start with the fork. The fork is the tool used most often to win material fast. To do a fork to our enemy, we only have to threaten to capture 2 pieces at a time with one of our own pieces which should be of lesser value than those pieces if in the end, we have to lose it in the exchange.

We continue with the skewer, although this tactic is more used in the endgame, it can be used in other phases as well. To do a skewer, we have to put the enemy king in check with a bishop, rook or queen, and once the king moves out of the way, we capture a piece that was behind the king.

Here, if the pawn moves to c4, it puts the king in check and at the same time menaces to capture the rook. When the king moves, the pawn only has to take the rook.

Here, if the bishops moves to b5 it menaces both enemy rooks, it is assured to be able to capture one on the next move.

Here, the rook moves a1 to put the king in check and when the king moves out of the way (its only option) the rook will be able to capture the knight.
