THE DOUBLED PAWN AND THE PIN

Starting with the doubled pawn. The doubled pawn is bad to have, so consequently, it is good to give to our enemy. It gives us almost the equivalent of having a pawn behind. Doubled pawns are two pawns of the same color that are on the same file. They are weak because of the fact that they cannot protect one another, so are easier to capture.

The pin is a way of paralyzing an enemy piece. It is done by placing a piece somewhere in order that the enemy cannot move a designated piece because it would put itself in check or would lose a piece that would be behind.

Here the rook pins the knight and on the next move will be able to take it!

Here the bishop pins the rook and on the next move will be able to take it.


Here, the pawns on e2 and e6 are doubled and are much weaker and more vulnerable to be captured than if they would be on different files because they cannot protect each other.
