Session # 12
ELASTICITY TECHNIQUE

The Elasticity Technique is a very valuable defense technique that any serious player should know and put into practice. It consists of protecting a piece more times (with more pieces) than it needs to be, in order to give more elasticity to our other pieces.

This way we can continue to use our piece as we wish as opposed to having to keep them where they are for the soul purpose of defending another piece! Its basically a defense technique to liberate our pieces, we don't them tied up because we never know when we could need them.

Here the pawn on d4 is attacked by the black queen and bishop, and is protected by white's queen and knight, so white cannot move those two pieces out of the way because they would lose their pawn, but white might need their queen or knight for something else in the near future. They have to give their pieces more freedom, and too do this they should protect their pawn one more time, for example by moving their knight to b5.
